NEC LCD2690WUXi2 Wide Gamut Monitor

My old CRT was beginning to give some problems so went looking for a replacement.

The NEC  LCD2690WUXi^2 is a 25.5 inch wide gamut monitor.

If you want to get hold of one you will need to get in touch with Enkay Technologies the authorised distributors for NEC in India. This monitor will have to be special ordered. Full marks to Sushant of Enkay,  Mumbai for excellent service :-)

For calibration you will have to get hold of the Spectraview II software licence,  which is available in the US only ( see second from the bottom) . For downloading the Spectraview software itself,  click here.  I had to ask someone in the US to get hold of it for me. The reason why this software is recommended is,  that you are now able to  calibrate the LUT of the monitor directly. The earlier method was that the,  LUT of the video card was calibrated.

The best hardware for the colorimeter is the Gretag Eye One display 2. But, you can do with a Colorvision Spyder as well.

I have calibrated my monitor for 110cd/m^2 .

Why 110 ..take a read here > http://www.naturescapes.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=161473&p=1610198

Looks very very nice and ….I am a happy boy !

A hand at some simple macro with processing

Today, I tried something which I usually don’t .

Regular flower macros but I spun them a lil in post processing.

Geotagging Images

I just got back from a trip to Manas & Kaziranga National Parks. One of the things I wanted to try was “Geotagging“. Geotagging helps to write the exact location where the pic was shot, into the EXIF of the pic itself. The software also creates a “.kml” file which will help view the route along with, the exact point on the track where the particular photograph was taken.

I took along a Garmin Etrex Legend GPS and also this is where it gets more interesting, a Nokia 5800 Expressmusic along with a Nokia LD-4W bluetooth GPS. Although the Nokia 5800 Expressmusic has a built in GPS, I took along an external GPS since that is so much more flexible for my application. Besides, the Nokia LD-4W is only a few tens of grams in weight and, smaller than a credit card :-) . So its hardly any trouble carrying it.

I set the Garmin to “Log Track mode”. For the Nokia, here is what I did. Since the Nokia application, “Sportstracker” was at that time not available for the Nokia 5800 (Sportstracker for 5800 EM) , I downloaded another software called @Trip v1.01 . This is a simple phone app that creates a log of the GPS track and writes to a file. You can also use similar apps like GPSED. It will also geotag pics clicked by that phone. Besides you can use the bluetooth GPS + gps app on any non-gps phone.

A bit of Gaussian Blur

I worked on this pic from Tadoba, so as to blur everything but, the four spotted owlets.

Capture NX NR & Sharpening settings that I use

I use RAW exclusively.

1. Set view to 100% then,  turn OFF Sharpening in the Base Adjustment.

2. Base Adjustment> Camera Adjustments> Sharpening set to NONE.

3. Base Adjustment> Detail Adjustments> Noise Reduction > Intensity & Sharpness set to “0″

Noise Reduction – NR ( Works pretty good for High ISO NR as well )

4. Add New Step> Select Adjustment> Noise Reduction > Intensity – As desired [usually under 5] , Sharpness Set to “0″ , Method Set to Better Quality.

Note: If you want to Paint IN” NR then, dont click OK but, move the window to a side and apply “+” Brush. After you finish Painting in NR, now Click OK. If you would like to Wipe off the NR, Click OK and then use the “-” Brush.

5. Opacity > Blend Mode Normal > adjust opacity as desired.

6. Sharpening: ( Works Great for High ISO especially)

7. Add New Step> Select Adjustment> Focus> High Pass. Use a low value where only the outlines just begins to show.

8. Opacity > Blend Mode set to Overlay then, Luminance & Chrominance > adjust opacity of Luminance & Chrominance as desired. Usually only Luminance Opacity start from 50% and increase till desired. Chrominance set to 100% Opacity.
