Goa Zuari River

April 10th,2011

On 02 April I did a quick trip to Goa. For the gear that I packed, see the preceding post.

Mr. BM Kamath runs boat trips on the Zuari. His setup is called “Crocodile Station”. I highly recommend his trips 🙂

The boat

We did two trips (morning and evening ) and were rewarded with a quite a few sightings.

One of the first birdies I got was the “Clamorous reed warbler” . The boat drifted in pretty close and I struggled with the focus and missed quite a few shots.

Wire Tailed swallows. This one below is actually a tighter frame. I added some canvas to the left and also to the right and cropped to a square frame.

I got the Collared Kingfisher at almost eye level.

The first shot is with the 300mm. See the clutter.  We then moved the boat to the right and shot through the gap with the 600mm. The move got me a nice green background and, I had to clone out a twig poking in on the right of the frame. I waited for the birdie to move its head and come into the spotlight and then clicked.

I used the flash with the better beamer to fill in some light since, the birdie was in the shade.

Osprey Taking off.  I added some canvas to the right and below.

Fir this shot , I messed up the AF settings. I should have been on Dynamic AF but was on Single shot. Hence I had to keep the reticule on the birdie for it to focus. And ofcourse,  I “messed up” holding the hot reticule on to the flying bird 🙂

The last pics of the evening was yet another osprey. This time I was set with the right settings. I was on Dynamic 21 point AF. The Nikon D3 faithfully tracked focus and, I got the complete series 🙂

  1. Dear Krishnan,

Spent the last >1 hr watching your photos. Amazing! The Stork billed kingfisher shot is my favourite (no injustice meant to the other photos). I am enthralled by the image and its colours.

    Keep clicking!
    Cheers,
    Deepak
